Indonesia's Thomas Cup team followed in the footsteps of their female compatriots, competing in the Uber Cup, by thrashing Singapore in the first qualifying round on Monday at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, India.
However, team manager Christian Hadinata expressed dissatisfaction with his players' performances.
'It is good that the players felt pressured in their first matches. It wasn't easy for them to win,' he said.
Indonesia ' which is in Group A with Thailand, Nigeria and Singapore ' was off to a good start thanks to Tommy Sugiarto, who had to play to the best of his abilities to overcome Zi Liang Derek Wong 21-11, 17-21, 21-15.
World number one men's doubles players Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan were too powerful a pairing for their opponents and easily won 21-15, 21-16 against Danny Chrisnanta/Chayut Triyachart.
Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka ensured Indonesia's victory by defeating Huang Chao 21-17, 21-14.
Men's doubles Angga Pratama/Rian Agung Saputro widened the gap by winning the next match 21-9, 21-15 over Yong Kai Terry Hee/Zi Liang Derek Wong and Simon Santoso wrapped up the qualifying opener with a 21-16, 22-20 win over Kwan Ting Sean Lee.
'I hope I can play more patiently in the next round. This was my first match so I was still adapting to the conditions on the court,' Simon said after his match.
'All three men's singles players need to improve their game and motivation to win the matches,' coach Joko Suprianto said.
Indonesia will face Nigeria on Tuesday before playing against Thailand the next day.
A day earlier, Indonesia's Uber Cup team passed its first obstacle of Australian. Indonesia's Uber team, which is in group X,
will play against Singapore in the second qualifying round on Tuesday before facing South Korea on Wednesday.
The last time Indonesia won the Thomas Cup was in 2002, while the country's women shuttlers last brought home the Uber Cup in 1996.
