orkers at pig-farmingcompany PT Indotirta Suaka (ITS) in Batam, Riau Islands, have demanded the company reemploy44 workers who were previously dismissed and change the employment status of 480 workers intopermanent staff.
The workers plan to organize a strike if the company rejects their demands.
Duma Sitanggang, a representative of the company's labor union, told The Jakarta Post that the conflict between the employees and the management of the company had begun on Sept. 10 last year. The workers protested against the outsourcing system used by ITS, and also demanded that the company increase the minimum wage based on the 2013 city minimum wage (UMK) levels.
'There has been no response to our demands. The discussion on permanent status for employees has also been stopped,' Duma said.
Indotirta Suaka is among the companies owned by Indonesian conglomerate, the Salim Group. It exports 1,500 pigs per day and meets 30 percent of Singapore's demand for pork.(dhi/dic)
