akarta Deputy Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said the city administration would do whatever it took to combat fatal drug abuse, including stand by its decision to close the infamous Stadium nightclub in Jakarta.
The city closed the club, a well-known hub for drug dealing and prostitution, after South Minahasa police officer Second Brig. Jicky Vay Gumerang died of an overdose at the club last week.
Ahok said he had been criticized for closing down the establishment, with some saying the city would lose revenue as a result.
'It is better to have less income than allow someone's child to die,' he said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
Earlier, Jakarta Tourism Agency head Arie Budhiman said he would allow the Stadium management to open another business at the site such as a restaurant. (fss)
