Chevron empowers craftswomen in East Kalimantan

W

oven bags made of recycled floor cleaner sachets and pencil cases made of recycled political campaign banners are some of the unique things to be seen at PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia'€™s booth at the 38th Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) exhibition.

The company seeks to empower local craftswomen in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, by helping them run their own accessories business. The accessories are made out of inorganic recycled waste, thereby mitigating its negative impact on the environment.

Some craftswomen from Balikpapan were also present at the booth to teach visitors how to weave the bags.

'€œThe craftswomen work under the Rumah Kreatif Balikpapan, a home industry supported by Chevron. The organization was established approximately a year ago. Currently, the organization has 30 craftswomen, some of whom are people with disabilities,'€ Chevron CSR staff member Etty Nuzuliyanti said on the sidelines of the IPA exhibition.

'€œWe procure the materials for the accessories from various waste banks in Balikpapan,'€ she added.

She acknowledged that marketing accessories made out of trash posed a challenge for Chevron, but with creativity, the task could be accomplished.

'€œWe have to clean the trash three times get rid of the bad smell. Then, we have to convince people that by purchasing the accessories, they will contribute not only to the lives of craftswomen from Balikpapan but also to environmental preservation,'€ she concluded.
