Police, military personnel deployed to protect house of attacked Catholics

ozens of police and military personnel have been deployed to secure the STIEYKPN Tanjungsari housing complex in Sleman, Yogyakarta, after members of aCatholic Rosary recital group at one of the houses were assaulted on Thursday.

"We have tightened security and patrols to maintain safety in thecommunity," Yogyakarta Police spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Anny Pujiastutisaid on Saturday,as reported by tempo.co.

On Thursday,a group of armed men attacked Galang Press publishing house director JuliusFelicianus, Kompas TV journalist Michael Aryawan and three others as theyprayed at Julius' house.

Julius was severely injured in the incident, and the mob stole a camerabelonging to Michael.

Julius and Michael were able to recognize one of the attackers, a manidentified only as KH, who was a neighbor.

Anny said that the police have detained KH and named him a suspect, and arestill pursuing the other perpetrators.

She added that the police were currently cooperating with the Sleman district militarycommand to secure the area, and said that personnel have been equipped withrifles.

According to the housing complex's neighborhood community unit head, Isyanto, therewere not many people at the housing complex at the time of the attack because theyhad gone to mourn the death of a community elder. Most residents did not returnto their houses until 11p.m. local time.

Isyanto added that the community had become very anxious as a result of theincident.(fss/dic)
