The winning team WISCI
JAKARTA: WISCI became the first team in JCA history to have made it to four successive finals and won the third title in a row when they trashed Ceylon in Division 1 of the Apple Coal JCA League finals on Sunday.
In the Division II finals, Emerio defeated the Jakarta
Barbarians to claim their first JCA League trophy.
In what was a decidedly one-sided affair, defending champion WISCI bested
Ceylon by 104 runs to take home the trophy, finishing with a respectable 257/9
in 35 overs.
With 88 runs, opener Viraj Bhammar was the top scorer, while man of the match
David Holme blasted another 63 runs. Overall, WISCI netted 93 runs in the
middle 12 overs and 87/3 over the next 12, totaling 180/4 in 24 overs.
For Ceylon to have had any chance of slowing WISCI's torrid pace, it needed its
big gun Maca Dihan Silva to fire and to fire big. His showing of 35 runs ended
Ceylon's hope for any meaningful comeback, and the team was bundled out for 153
runs. By match's end, Timothy had scored 26 runs, JP Le Riche had taken four
wickets and Big Dave and Gaurav Tiwari had won two wickets each.
In a close finish to the Division II final at Gandhi ground, Emerio beat the
Barbarians by just two wickets. Electing to bat first, the Barbarians found
themselves struggling at 116/5 after 24 overs. An unbeaten 75 runs by Sam Mabey
and another 33 by Tim Moore helped the team notch a respectable 203/8 in 35
overs. Meanwhile, Sandeep Saulanke took four wickets.
Emerio reached its final tally after 31 overs, losing eight wickets along the
way, while Palwinder Singh and Manik each scored 61 and 26 runs, respectively.
Mabey and Ben Corbett picked up two wickets apiece.
Both Emerio and the Barbarians qualified for the Division I league next year,
but the Fez Rebels failed to make the grade, and will compete in the Division
II category.
On June 7, victors
and second-place finishers of Division I and II, along with this year's star
individual performers, will be honored by Australian cricketing great Merv
Hughes at JCA's annual Grand Dinner. ' JP
