ice-presidential candidate Hatta Rajasa attended the annual hospitality meeting of Nahdlatul Wathan, a Lombok-based Islamic organization and school, on his first day of campaigning, as the General Elections Commission (KPU) had announced June 4 through July 5 as the campaign period ahead of the July 9 presidential election.

Hatta, along with presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, obtained election number one for the ballot. They are backed by the Gerindra Party and its coalition comprising the Golkar Party and three Islamic parties: the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which has secured a total of 45.3 percent or 292 out of a total 560 seats at the House of Representatives.

On Wednesday, Hatta, who is also PAN chairman, arrived at 9:40 a.m. at the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah cultural park, where hundreds of the organization's students in scout uniforms greeted him, kompas.com reported.

Hatta approached several students and hugged them, and asked one of the students what his goal was in life. The student said he one day wanted to become president.

Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar; professor at the Koran Learning Center, Quraish Shihab; Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia Bahaa Desouki, and West Nusa Tenggara Governor Muhammad Zainul Majdi also attended the meeting.

Majdi also chairs the organization, which is located in Lombok, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province. (gda)
