Jokowi campaigns in N. Sumatra, Prabowo stays in Jakarta

P

residential candidate Joko'€œJokowi'€ Widodo visited several locations in North Sumatra on Tuesday, whilehis rival Prabowo Subianto stayed to deliver a speech in Jakarta.

Jokowi met hundreds of vendors and citizens at Pancurbatu market in Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, on his way to visit camps housing refugees from the Mount Sinabung eruption in Kabanjahe district, Karo regency.

Local people and vendors at the market called out Jokowi'€™s name and approached his car as he made his way to the market, prompting him to open the car window and then get out to shake the hands of supporters.

Local officials such as Pancurbatu district head Antonius Pangaribuan and Pancurbatu subdistrict police Comr. D. Sitepu were also spotted among the crowd surrounding Jokowi.

Meanwhile, Prabowo attended a public meeting at the Proclamation Monument in Central Jakarta to deliver a speech.

'€œMy father took me to Sukarno'€™s house when I was a child. I was mesmerized by the way he dressed. [On that occasion] Sukarno lifted me up into the air,'€ he said at the meeting, as quoted by Antara news portal.

Prabowo said he held Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta in high esteem and therefore pledged to continue in his endeavor to become president.

The candidate pairs of Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla and Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa are the presidential tickets for the upcoming presidential election, which is slated to be held on July 9. (gda/dic)
