residentialcandidate Prabowo Subianto has questioned why he is being accused oforchestrating human rights violations during the 2014 presidential race, whensuch claims were absent during his 2009 bid for the vice presidency as therunning mate for Indonesian democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwomanMegawati Soekarnoputri.
"Why wasn't this a problem when I was Megawati's vice presidential candidate?" Prabowo said as quoted by Antara on Thursday, after a campaign event in Palembang, South Sumatra, referring to the recent public outcry over his alleged involvement in the 1998 abduction of pro-democracy activists.
Prabowo seemed to imply that the reason his alleged involvement was currently in the spotlight was because of negative campaigning launched by his rival in the presidential bid.
Earlier, a letter containing a recommendation from the Indonesian Military's (TNI) Officers Honorary Council (DKP) to dismiss then Lt. Gen. Prabowo from military serve had been widely circulated on the Internet.
Former council members Lt. Gen. (ret) Fachrul Rozi and Gen. (ret) Agum Gumelar confirmed the letter's authenticity and veracity, but said that they had forgotten the details.
According to former Army chief of staff Gen. (ret) George Toisutta, who is now a member of Prabowo's campaign team, Prabowo merely laughed when he heard the letter had been circulated on the Internet, and declined to comment.
