'€˜Becak'€™ driver's daughter gets more scholarship offers

Raeni, the daughter of a becak (pedicab) driver who recently inspired many by graduating with a distinction from Semarang State University, has received two more scholarship offers in addition to the Presidential Scholarship offered to her by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Friday.

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to 100 Indonesian students who are accepted into master's or doctoral programs at 50 of the world's leading higher education institutes.

Semarang State University spokesperson Sucipto Hadi Purnomo said Raeni had also been offered the Government scholarship - for those accepted at universities outside the top 50 - and also the Bidikmisi scholarship program for students from poor families, as reported by kompas.com.

"Scholarships and job offers are related to your future so [Raeni] will have to really think about her options," he said on Saturday.

Previously, Raeni said she wished to continue her studies in England, and later return to Indonesia as a lecturer.

Sucipto said Semarang State University would assist Raeni in her preparations to enter her desired master's program abroad.

He added that the university was also ready to mold her into one of their lecturers, and was prepared to offer her a scholarship if she wished to continue her studies at Semarang State University.

Raeni also said she had applied for the Indonesia Mengajar (Indonesia Teaches) program. If she is accepted into the program, she will be placed on a remote island in Indonesia to teach young children. (fss/dic)
