police officer has acknowledged that he is worried about the rising number of sexual abuse cases reported to the police. He said up to now, the Sarolangun Police's women and children'sprotection unit had received 58 reports of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
Sarolangun Police criminal investigations chief Adj. Comr. Suharta said on Saturday that the majority of alleged victims in the cases were minors.
Three cases involving minors were reported in June, and the women and children's protection division was directed to handle them, Suharta said.
"The latest case surrounded a pornographic video involving a minor," he said.
Meanwhile, the National Police recorded 98 sexual abuse cases against children in 18 provinces in May this year. The police investigated 1,635 child sexual abuse cases last year.
Suharta emphasized the importance role of parents and the government in preventing such cases.
He also pointed out that even though the range of punishments for such crimes was fairly stringent, would-be perpetrators did not seem to be deterred given the rise in the number of such cases.
"The sanctions are pretty heavy but for some reason, criminals are not afraid of the punishments. We need to work together to tackle the worryingly high rate of sexual abuse cases," Suharta said. (fss/dic)
