he head of the Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPD), Noldy Liow, said three volcanoes in North Sulawesi had been put on alert.
"The three volcanoes are mounts Lokon, Soputan and Karangetan," he said in Manado, North Sulawesi, on Saturday, as reported by Antara news agency.
The alert status has been imposed because volcanic activity [in the three volcanoes] is increasing, and people living nearby need to be ready in case any of the three erupts.
Noldy said that the danger zone around Mt. Lokon was 2.5 kilometers from the Tompaluan crater, which may become covered in volcanic ash, or expel volcanic material if it erupted.
"Mt. Lokon has experienced several tremors, which have traveled up to the surface. This may indicate the migration of magma. However, we cannot confirm whether or not this will result in an eruption. This is why we hope that local communities will be vigilant and follow all the instructions we issue about the danger zones," he said.
He added that the BNPD had filed a report with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and that the local government was preparing in the event of having to launch disaster mitigation activities.
Meanwhile, the BNPD is continuing to monitor the volcanic activities of all three volcanoes intensively. (fss)
