orth Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho inaugurated on Wednesday former deputy mayor Dzulmi Eldin as Medan mayor, replacing Rahudman Harahap who was dismissed after being found guilty of corruption.
During the ceremony, Gatot said he hoped Eldin would continue to work hard during his remaining 18 months in office.
"Pro-people programs have already been implemented and they must continue, while being regularly evaluated for any obstacles they may face so that steps can be taken to improve them," Gatot said after swearing Eldin in at the Medan Legislative Council (DPRD) on Wednesday.
Eldin said he would continue to work as he had done before in his new role as mayor, adding that all the programs needed to be developed.
Eldin was appointed acting Medan mayor last month after Rahudman was named a suspect in a 2005 graft case concerning the embezzlement of village funds during his time as regional secretary for South Tapanuli regency.
Although Rahudman was initially acquitted by the Medan Corruption Court, prosecutors appealed to the Supreme Court, which subsequently found him guilty and handed down a five-year prison sentence.
Rahudman is incarcerated at the Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary in Medan.(fss/dic)
