Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera) is seen in a scene from How To Train Your Dragon 2
DreamWorks did not waste any time announcing a sequel to How To Train Your Dragon soon after the movie's huge success in 2010, but it took four years for the fans of dragon riders to witness the new adventures of Hiccup and Toothless.
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel) is now a 20-year-old the villagers expect to become the chieftain's heir.
His father Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), the chieftain, tries to talk him into taking the position, but Hiccup prefers flying with his powerful Night Fury dragon, Toothless, and charting unmapped territories of the new world he sees from the back of the flying dragon.
Problems arise when Hiccup finds out about villain Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou) controlling dragons to invade the world.
The friendship of Hiccup and Toothless is also tested while they are at the center of trying to maintain peace between the humans and dragons.
Director Dean DeBlois proves that even without his partner in the first movie, Chris Sanders, the animation has better plot, character development, action and visualization (Nothing can beat a desolate ice cave with thousands of dragons inside).
New character Valka (Cate Blanchett) also grabs the attention of the audience with her expertise on dragons and history related to the Vikings of Berk and Eret (Kit Harrington), who got it wrong with dragons the first time.
Adapted from a children's novel by Cressida Cowell, the film follows the traditional rule for a sequel- make everything bigger. What sets this film apart, however, from other disappointing film sequels is that this sequel has a rich story.
But there are still things humans can learn about dragons, which is why DeBlois plans to produce the final installment of the trilogy set to be released in five years.
