There is a global push, including from the EU, for e-passports, also called biometric passports or digital passports. It looks like a normal passport, but it contains the owners' biometric information. The current standardized biometrics used for this type of identification system are facial recognition, fingerprint recognition and iris recognition.
With e-passports, you certainly can go quickly through immigration and at airports around the world that have machines such as 'Smart Gate'. The machine checks your biometrics to see that it is actually you. The machine not only checks your biometrics, but also checks directly online with your government's computer for verification.
The EU has mentioned 'smart borders' and biometrics with 10 fingerprints, and the EU database has heaps of fingerprints that they will share with various governments around the world.

The biggest hurdle is the necessity to personally show up. Hope they find a solution for that.
