Comments: Stray dogs must be culled: Bali governor

Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said Thursday that the provincial husbandry agency'€™s rabies team must implement the 2009 rabies prevention bylaw firmly in an attempt to curb rabies on the island.

Pastika stressed that any stray dogs should be killed immediately to prevent people from being bitten.
'€œIf any stray dogs are found, feel free to eliminate them.

It has been stipulated in the bylaw that dog owners have to confine their pets at home,'€ Pastika said during a meeting at the governor'€™s office in Denpasar.

Your comments:

The problem is that rubbish and thrown-away food leftovers are now limitless in Bali. This has caused the population explosion of these natural scavengers.

Urbanization and its proportionally high transmigrated population with a different attitude towards Balinese dogs also forces action.

The culling approach suggested above though is very heartless.

Sick and aggressive animals roam the streets, responsible for thousands of accidents.

Too many people have died already! In every Western country, dogs should be leashed! Now also in Indonesia! It is about time!

It'€™s amusing that Governor Pastika touches on the real problem then fails to offer a plan to educate people. In 2012 the estimated budget was Rp 2.1 million per year to be clear by 2015; when someone comes up with the proof that that money has been spent on directly combating rabies I'€™ll be more convinced that they are making a real effort.

The dogs in Bali are out of control: roaming and harassing locals and foreigners alike. There needs to be a mass cull '€” the same as what occurred on Nusa Penida island a couple of months ago.
