Police name nine suspects in attack on officer

T

he Papua Police have named nine suspectsin the assault of Brig. Asriadi, who died after attempting to break up a dicegambling game at Youtefa market in Jayapura, Papua on Wednesday.

"We have named nine as suspects of the assault, while another 14 have been named suspects on gambling charges," Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said in Jayapura on Thursday.

Tito, however, acknowledged that an offender who ran away with Asriadi's rifle was still at large.

The dissolution of the dice game also caused the death of three civilians: two were found dead after the clash between the police and the gamblers, while another died later the same evening from a gunshot wound.

Asriadi's body has been flown to his hometown of Soppeng in South Sulawesi, while the bodies of the three other victims remain at the Bhayangkara hospital in Jayapura.

Tito added that the police had formed four teams in order to solve the gambling and assault cases.

Separately, Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tommy Mano said that he was determined to eradicate cases of gambling, which have caused distress to the general public. (fss/dic)
