A green group has called on the government to tackle environmental destruction as it could directly impact on fish stocks.
'It is clear that damage to the environment will affect the availability of food stocks, particularly fish protein,' People's Coalition for Fishery Justice (KIARA) secretary-general Abdul Halim said on Friday.
Halim said that damage to coastal and marine environments had forced many residents to quit their jobs as fishermen.
'They can, however, work as farmers of cultivated fish, which will not cause damage to the environment and can serve as another source of sustainable livelihoods,' Halim said.
The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has earlier drawn up a master plan on national fish cultivation intended to improve sustainable fish production in the country.
'The [ministry], in cooperation with the international organization WorldFish is drafting a National Master Plan for Cultured Fish Cultivation up to the year 2020,' said the ministry's secretary-general Sjarief Widjaja.
He said the master plan was based on a research project called Aquaculture Futures Indonesia, which was expected to wrap up in the next 18 months
