Teachers claim to be unaware of abuse

fter questioning two contract teachers from state senior high school SMA 3 on Thursday for an hour, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) revealed that both teachers claimed they did not know about the abuse that occurred during the school'€™s trip to Tangkuban Perahu, West Java.

KPAI commissioner Susanto said that on the school trip, the two teachers, namely Isa and Hikmawan, had to supervise 29 students from the 10th to 12th grades, as well as 16 alumni. Ten of the 29 students were 10th graders, or the juniors on the trip, while the rest were in charge either as committee members or as the juniors'€™ coaches.

Susanto said that during the eight-day trip, Isa supervised participants for the first six days only, while Hikmawan supervised the last two days.

Due to the large number of participants, both teachers acknowledged some difficulties in monitoring all activities, he added.

'€œBecause it was impossible to monitor all activities on the school trip, both teachers said they did not know about the abuse, allegedly carried out by the coaches,'€ he went on.

According to Susanto, the two teachers said that as far as they had witnessed, the seniors and alumni did not abuse their juniors during the school trip. The teachers added that if the seniors and alumni had indeed abused their juniors, they had conducted such actions in locations that the teachers did not know about, or during particular activities in which the two were not involved.

Susanto said that his commission previously questioned the school'€™s principal, Ni Ketut Diah Chaerani. She said that she did not know about the abuse at all because she was a new principal at the school.

After questioning the principal and the two supervisors, the commission would summon the alumni as soon as possible to get more detailed information about the abuse and the deaths of two of the school'€™s 10th graders, Susanto added.

Regarding the death of Arfiand Caesar Al Irhami, the two teachers said that they had forbidden him to continue the trip on the fourth day because he had confessed that he was sick. But the 16-year-old student forced himself to go on, because he wanted to earn an '€œachievement jacket'€, a prize offered by the committee for all 10th graders that could finish the hike, Susanto revealed.

'€œThe two teachers said that they never saw committee members abusing Arfiand,'€ he said.

Besides Arfiand, who died on June 20, Padian Prawiro Dirya, another 10th grader, died on July 3 at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung, West Java. The students'€™ deaths were allegedly the result of abuse perpetrated by their seniors. (alz)
