PBNU condemns violence in Gaza

N

ahdlatulUlama executive council (PBNU) chair, Slamet Effendi Yusuf, said that the NU condemnedIsrael's military attacks on Gaza, which has claimed the lives of innocentPalestinians.

"Muslims in particular, and Indonesians in general, we all feel a great sorrow over the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza that are bombarded daily by the Zionist state of Israel," he said in Jakarta, as reported by Antara news agency.

The Israeli government has authorized the call-up of as many as 40,000 troops. Israel launched strikes against more than 100 targets on Thursday, while militants fired more than 50 rockets, including at least one intercepted over Tel Aviv.

As many as 81 Palestinians have been killed, about two-thirds of them civilians, with at least 10 being children since the Israel'€™s Gaza offensive started.

Slamet said that there was no justification for the attacks and the UN Security Council must immediately discuss the escalating conflict between Israel's military and the Hamas militants.

Furthermore, he added that the Arab League must also handle the situation with a firm hand, and suggested that it may be able to use its diplomatic forces to stop the attacks.

Previously, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also condemned the attacks on Gaza, which were one of the topics discussed during a Cabinet meeting in Jakarta on Friday.

Yudhoyono said that the government would continue to actively stop the attacks through diplomatic means, whether through the UN, the Islamic Cooperation Organization (OKI) or the Non-Aligned Movement. (fss)
