akarta Education Agency head LasroMarbun has said that he has appointed senior state high school SMA 49 SouthJakarta principal Sugiono to replace former SMA 3 principal Ni Ketut DiahChaerani.
On Friday, Lasro demoted Ni Ketut and her deputy principal La Ode Makbudu for neglect that led to the death of two junior-year students.
"He [Sugiono] will only be acting principal," he said when contacted by tempo.co on Saturday, adding that Sugiono will start on Monday.
Lasro explained that there would be several requirements the new principal would have to fulfill, including being more strict when faced with cases of violence toward students in the school environment.
Furthermore, the principal must be able to coordinate with law enforcement, and should not be easily influenced by outside forces, especially alumni of the school.
Although he said that he did not have the authority to ban alumni from participating in school activities, Lasro said that he had already sent a letter to all school principals in Jakarta to prohibit outsiders from taking part in school activities.
Lasro added that he would also shut down any extracurricular activity if they showed any signs that students were facing violence.
On June 19, during an outdoor trekking activity, a student named Arfiand Caesar Al Irhami passed out and was later picked up by the parents of one of his fellow students who had also become sick on the trip. Arfiand was taken to the Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC) Hospital in Jakarta, where he died on June 21.
Furthermore, another junior student who took part in the trip recently passed away after undergoing intensive medical treatment at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung.
Five senior-year students have been named suspects by the police and are currently being held in detention centers in Jakarta. (fss)
