n response to the high demand for free transportation for motorcyclists ahead of the annual Idul Fitri exodus, the Transportation Ministry, with assistance from the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), will add an additional ship to transport homebound travelers.
The ministry's director general for sea transportation, Bobby Mamahit, said Tuesday that the ship provided by the Navy would be able to transport a total of 1,000 motorcycles and 1,500 travelers.
'We held a meeting earlier today in Tanjung Priok [North Jakarta] and we have decided to add more capacity to serve the route to Semarang [Central Java],' Bobby told reporters.
As previously reported, the government has provided two ships to transport 6,000 motorcycles and 12,000 travelers on July 24 and 26. These will serve the routes Tanjung Priok to Tanjung Emas (Semarang), and Tanjung Priok to Panjang (Lampung).
Two roll-on/roll-off ferries will also be available to transport the Idul Fitri travelers, with a capacity of 1,500 motorcycles and 3,000 passengers, serving the routes from Jakarta to Tegal, Central Java, on July 23 and 25, and Jakarta to Cirebon, West Java, on July 24 and 26.
So far, the waiting list for the additional ship has reached 300 motorcycles, according to Bobby.
