Gatot replaces Budiman as new Army chief of staff

P

resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyonohas appointed Army Strategic Reserve commander (Pangkostrad) Lt. Gen. GatotNurmantyo the new army chief of staff, replacing Gen. Budiman, an army officialhas said.

'€œPak SBY has appointed Lt. Gen. Gatot the new army chief of staff,'€ Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

However, Fuad acknowledged that he was still in the dark on when Yudhoyono would inaugurate the new official.

'€œMaybe the President is waiting for a more conducive situation,'€ he said.

Three high officials were nominated to replace Gen. Budiman. Besides Gatot, the others nominated were Lt. Gen. Waris, who is currently posted as National Resilience Council secretary-general and deputy Army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir.

Speculation was rife that Budiman'€™s dismissal was related to his alleged involvement in politics.(dic)
