he Indonesian government has prepared moves and a firm challenge to push PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara to withdraw its international litigation against the country's policy that bans mineral ore exports.
Coordinating Economic Minister Chairul Tanjung said after a meeting on Monday that the government was forming a team led by the Investment Coordinating Board's (BKPM) head to carry out technical preparations, including the appointment of a legal team to represent the country against Newmont.
The government, he added, had also planned within this week to submit a response to the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), where Newmont has filed the litigation. A counter litigation has also prepared, according to Chairul.
'Don't play games with our country. We are ready to face it all if the company shows no good faith by withdrawing its lawsuit. The deadline is when the proceedings take place, when we have appointed a lawyer,' Chairul said.
Earlier this month, Newmont filed the arbitration with the Washington-based international arbitration institution against the Indonesian government relating to the recent ban on mineral ore exports. The government has called the company to withdraw the legal suit, threatening harsh consequences.
