Groupon Indonesia to focus more on apparel

G

roupon Indonesia, the local unit of US-based daily deal website Groupon, is focusing more on its fashion line to cater to the growing demand for apparel products across the country.

The company last week launched a dedicated fashion page that offers around 200 fashion items, a 30 percent increase compared to when it had no special page for its fashion line, Groupon Indonesia CEO and country head Indrasto Budisantoso said on Monday.

'€œWe launched the special page because we saw that 60 percent of the total Groupon users are women, who are mostly crazy about apparel,'€ he said.

Seventy-eight percent of Indonesian online shoppers have bought fashion items online, while only 46 percent and 43 percent of them have bought mobile devices and consumer electronics, respectively, according to a recent survey on online behavior by the Indonesian E-Commerce Association (idEA).

Groupon Indonesia will also continue to expand its best-deal voucher line, which has become the company'€™s biggest revenue contributor.

'€œWe have three main product categories, namely vouchers, travel and goods. We are famously known for our best-deal vouchers and the trend will still likely sustain,'€ Indrasto said.

Groupon Indonesia is also now strengthening its online presence to attract more consumers '€” many of whom access the Internet via their smartphones.

Shipments of mobile devices into Indonesia will reach 60 million units this year, a 7 percent increase from 56 million units in 2013, the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicted.

The country, home to more than 240 million people, saw 82 million connected to the Internet as of May, a surge from the 71.19 million throughout last year, data from the Communications and Information Ministry showed.

To tap deeper into the market of consumers with mobile Internet connections, Groupon Indonesia launched on Monday its Android-based mobile application, dubbed Groupon Mobile.

'€œWe also expect to launch the same mobile version for iOS operating systems some time this month,'€ Indrasto said.

Not only does the mobile application offer consumers the same experience as its desktop version, it also provides '€œnearby'€ and '€œsearch'€ features, which allow users to easily find the nearest stores offering the best deals, ranging from travel to cuisine.

Groupon, which is the world'€™s largest daily deal website, acquired Indonesian best-deal website Disdus, now Groupon Indonesia, in 2011 to cash in on the country'€™s growing e-commerce market.

Indonesia'€™s e-commerce market is predicted to have a total value of Rp 295 trillion in 2016, a surge from Rp 94.5 trillion last year, according to data from idEA.
