olid earnings for a range of big companies helped nudge the stock market higher on Tuesday. The restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill and the cable giant Comcast surged after reporting better results than Wall Street expected.
On Tuesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 61.81 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 17,113.54.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 9.90 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,983.53.
The Nasdaq composite rose 31.31 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,456.02.
For the week:
The Dow is up 13.36 points, or 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 5.31 points, or 0.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 23.87 points, or 0.5 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 536.88 points, or 3.2 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 135.17 points, or 7.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 279.43 points, or 6.7 percent. (***)
