apanese foreign affairs minister Fumio Kishida has congratulated president-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on winning the presidential race this year.
"On July 22, the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) concluded the presidential election vote recapitulation and announced Mr. Joko Widodo as the winner. The Japanese government appreciates the smooth-sailing presidential election this year and congratulates Mr. Joko Widodo for being elected president for the next period," Kishida said in a press release received by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.
Kishida added that the Japanese government perceived Indonesia as a very important strategic partner and planned to increase cooperation with the new government to strengthen the two nations' friendship.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will reportedly also send his personal congratulations to the newly elected president.
United States President Barack Obama, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott have telephoned Jokowi to congratulate him.
Also on Tuesday night, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak congratulated Jokowi via his Twitter account, shortly after the KPU's announcement. (fss)
