ine children and three adults were rushed to Pondok Indah Hospital in Kembangan Selatan and the Regional General Hospital in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Tuesday evening after they were burned by exploding gas.
'The incident happened on Tuesday evening when the victims were playing a game in front of a stall selling canisters that each contained 3 kilograms of liquefied natural gas,' chief detective at the Kembangan Police station, Adj. Comr. Robinson Manurung, said on Wednesday.
He said the victims were still undergoing intensive medical treatment for their serious burns.
Robinson said that according to a preliminary investigation, the explosion appears to have been an accident.
Zainuddin, the 38-year-old stall owner, said he detected the smell of leaking gas before the explosion after a courier from the gas company delivered several full canisters to him.
He said he asked the courier to move the defective canister to another place to avoid fire, but according to police it was not moved far enough away to prevent the gas from being ignited, possibly by a nearby stove.
