Comments on other issues: ERP fails to detect local license numbers

The trial electronic road pricing (ERP) system on Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta, which has been going on for several days, has shown certain weaknesses in its gantry or physical framework, especially in detecting cars'€™ license numbers.

Your comments:

The solution is straightforward. Require every vehicle to have a transponder. The missinformation in this article about gantries being affected somehow by the environment is a joke. Kapsch has five national toll systems in operation in addition to a plethora of regional toll systems around the world. They didn'€™t achieve industry greatness with weak systems as implied in the article.

Trans Man

Indonesian license plates frequently have the paint removed (that'€™s been trendy for a while in Jakarta), have their plates behind plastic (often already yellowed which makes it almost impossible to read the number even from 1 meter distance), plates are repainted with different fonts, fake plates are being used, part of the plate is missing (very popular with public transportation '€” maybe even on purpose) and worst of all second-hand cars are using plates from the original owner. With older cars there might be already two, three owners in between, which is sometimes understandable as it needs endless time to get new license plates corresponding to the current owner.

In Europe, especially in the European union (EU) plates are standardized between the countries, special reflecting paint is being used which does not interfere with radar traps (and there are plenty around on highways), tampering with license plates is strictly forbidden.
