overnor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo on Thursday gave away rice and cash as holiday bonuses, known locally as tunjangan hari raya (THR), to Jakarta residents only a few days prior to the Idul Fitri holiday.
He left City Hall at 2 p.m. and went to Penjaringan, North Jakarta, where hundreds of local residents had lined up to get their share.
Each adult received Rp 50,000 (US$4.32) and three kilograms of rice, while children were given Rp 10,000 each.
'This is my personal zakat mal [obligatory Islamic income-based alms]. I won't reveal the figures,' he told reporters at the site.
North Jakarta mayor Heru Budi Hartanto cited that a total of 600 kilograms of rice was given away to residents on the day.
'Pak Jokowi will give the alms to residents in five municipalities of the capital,' he said.
