Free of Prostitution signs protested in Dolly

F

ree of Prostitution'€ signboards put up by publicorder officers around the former Dolly red-light district in Surabaya havereceive resistance from local residents.

'€œWhat'€™s this '€¦ putting up signboards without coordinating with residents and village administrators?'€ said a resident who opposed the closure of the red-light district on Friday.

Scores of angry residents later convened on the Sawahan subdistrict office on Jl. Dukuh Kupang to meet subdistrict chief Bambang Hartono.

Localization Workers Front spokesperson Afeng questioned the intention of installing the signboards, as the group and residents had firmly opposed the closure of the red-light district, which was officially closed down on June 17.

'€œNothing said by the municipality is correct. Residents remain firm against the closure. The declaration and compensation has been engineered,'€ he was quoted by Antara as saying.

Sawahan subdistrict chief Bambang told the residents that the installation of the signboards was the authority of the municipality.

'€œWe are just implementing a municipality policy. If residents are not pleased, please go to the municipality to complain,'€ Bambang told the residents.
