he Corruption EradicationCommission (KPK) has warned state officials and civil servants against acceptinggifts during Idul Fitri. The KPK saidthat failing to adhere to the warning could open up the door to graft allegations.
KPK spokesman Johan Budi said Law No. 31/1999 in reference to Law No. 20/2001 on corruption eradication had prohibited state officials and civil servants from accepting gifts.
'Article 12B of Law No. 20/2001 stipulates that gratification for civil servants and state officials includes, among other things, money, goods, and travel tickets and accommodation facilities,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency on Friday.
Johan said those who were caught red-handed receiving bribes could face up to 20 years in prison and a Rp. 1 billion fine.
Johan further said that state officials and civil servants should file a report with the KPK within a month if they were forced to accept gifts.
He also recommended state officials and civil servants to distribute the gifts to orphanages, nursing homes and other people in need.
'However, they should report officially to their agencies regarding the distribution, along with written estimates of value and evidence of the deliveries. Each of the agencies should file the reports with the KPK afterward,' he said.
Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama prohibited Jakarta administration officials from accepting gifts during Idul Fitri after receiving a letter from the KPK.
Ahok added that the KPK began warning the city administration about accepting gifts during Idul Fitri starting last year. (gda)
