The Jakarta Police announced the start of an investigation into the intentional falsification of several news websites.
"We have started the investigation," Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Wednesday, as reported by kompas.com.
There are 10 websites that have been copied: antaranews.com, beritasatu.com, detik.com, inilah.com, kompas.com, liputan6.com, merdeka.com, republika.com, tempo.co and tribunnews.com.
The bogus websites can be easily differentiated from the real ones as the website URLs contain "--news.com" at the end of them. For example, the fake kompas.com website would be kompas.com--news.com.
Kompas.com chief editor Taufik H. Mihardja and tempo.co chief editor Daru Priyambodo both asked the communications and information ministry and the National Police to investigate and shut down the counterfeit websites.
"Pornographic and discriminatory websites are always immediately blocked. The websites distributing false information should also be shut down," Daru said.
Member of the Press Council Nezar Patria explained that the creators of the counterfeit websites intended to trick the public into believing the false information being distributed. Because of this he asked the real website owners to immediately file police reports and the general public to carefully scrutinize their news sources. (fss)
