Issue of the day: Prabowo-Hatta rejects election result

J

strong>July 22, Online

Candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa have rejected the 2014 presidential election vote counting process and results, claiming that the process was flawed and marred by widespread fraud.

Prabowo said the candidates decided to pull out of the election because of alleged irregularities by the General Elections Commission (KPU). '€œThe 2014 presidential election organized by the KPU was riddled with problems.

The election process was undemocratic and went against the 1945 Constitution,'€ he said at Polonia House in East Jakarta on Tuesday.

Your comments:

Prabowo is totally wrong. As I have said many times before, he is a sore loser. He was spoiled during Soeharto'€™s time. Now that he has withdrawn himself he can '€œseparately'€ make claims and complain about whatever he wants.

Prabowo'€™s erratic behavior shows he would return Indonesia to pre-1998 times.

Let them reject the results, but the people have spoken. It is a win-win situation for Indonesia. A person like Prabowo won'€™t change. He wanted to run the show and did not care much about Hatta, either, because it was all about himself.

I congratulate the Jokowi team for winning and also for remaining humble even while the Prabowo team and its supporters became bullies during the campaign.

Congratulations to the Jokowi team for a job well done.

Hopefully, it is a really new beginning for Indonesia moving toward a better future. The way forward will not be smooth, straight or easy after today'€™s elation.

If Indonesia succeeds in achieving religious tolerance, as a Muslim-majority state she will serve as a good example for many Muslim states. Isn'€™t it part of her Pancasila (state ideology), after all?

All I can say is congratulations to Indonesia and to the citizens who have voted for a future with Jokowi.

Also, in this election an extremely positive sign was the voter turnout of 70.5 percent of eligible voters. This number shows that as a nation you'€™re more willing to participate in your country'€™s future than voters in the US, UK and many other older democracies.

Don'€™t lose faith and remember that your vote counts.

Congratulations President-elect Jokowi and Indonesia!

Let us be thankful he did not win this election. It would have been a catastrophe if he had.

Prabowo shot himself in the foot at the end of the election. He could at least have had the grace to accept this loss.

His political career is now pretty much over and he has no chance five years down the road.
Let us herald a new beginning for Indonesia and let our budding democracy move forward. This is a great step forward for all the people of Indonesia.

Even with the enormous amount of funds Prabowo had at his disposal he still couldn'€™t win the election, so I am curious as to how Jokowi managed it with far less funds -- and by millions of votes.
