Officers with the West Palu Police department dispersed on Wednesday residents playing with firecrackers in Palu city, Central Sulawesi.
Police arrived near the Bambaru market in Palu where the firecrackers were being set off, an area that is home to a sizable community of ethnic Arabs.
Concerned citizens had been hurrying past the area in their vehicles, fearful of the impact of the firecrackers, some of which were 15 centimeters long.
Several local residents assured police that the firecracker show wouldn't last long, as supplies were limited. After receiving these assurances, the police reportedly left, according to Antara news agency.
After about 30 minutes, the show was over and residents dispersed.
Farid Djafar Nassar, a local elder, said the activity was a community tradition that was begun decades ago.
