Roads see fewer accidents during holiday

N

ational Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said that the number of traffic accidents during this year'€™s Idul Fitri mudik (exodus) was fewer than last year.

He said the police had recorded 1,584 traffic accidents nationwide between July 22 and 29, as reported by kompas.com.

"The number of accidents this year decreased by 248 cases from last year," he said on Wednesday.

Agus explained that 352 people had been killed in accidents while traveling home this year. In addition, 541 people were severely injured while 2,010 people sustained minor injuries.

In comparison, there were 1,832 accidents in 2013, in which 384 people died, 616 were severely injured and 2,300 sustained slight injuries.

The lower number of accidents, Agus said, was caused by the general public's higher awareness of traffic discipline.

He also said that a majority of the accidents involved motorcycles. However, fewer people traveled home by motorcycle, which meant that it was safer for people traveling in other modes of transportation.

"Last year there were 2,198 motorbikes, and this year there were 1,941. There's been a decrease of 12 percent, or 257 motorbikes," he explained. (fss)
