An unusually high number of visitors flooded the Borobudur temple compound in Magelang, Yogyakarta during the Idul Fitri holiday.
PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur (TWCB) head Bambang Irianto said that 48,429 domestic tourists and 937 foreign tourists visited Borobudur on Wednesday alone, according to kompas.com.
"The number of visitors was the highest on Wednesday during the Idul Fitri holiday," he said.
He explained that for the past 16 days there had been around 316,538 visitors in total.
The significant increase started the day after Idul Fitri on Tuesday, when 30,411 domestic tourists and 831 foreign tourists showed up.
"This number was an increase from last year on the day after Idul Fitri. Last year around 27,345 people visited [Borobudur]. It increased by 14.25 percent," Bambang said.
Bambang explained that 500 personnel from the military, the police, the youth wing of the Nahdlatul Ulama and the civilian community guard were present to secure the area.
Furthermore, the TWCB said they increased customer services to accommodate the high influx of visitors.
Visitors did not have to wear a sarung during the Idul Fitri holiday, as they usually do, because of the limited number of sarung available and also because of the difficulty of monitoring everyone. (fss)
