Mosque council calls for prays for victims of Israeli attacks

T

he Indonesia Mosque Council (DMI) has appealed to all mosques in the country to hold gaib and qunut nazilah prayers for victims of Israeli aggression against Palestinians.

"The DMI, through its imams in mosques across the country, has called for special prayers for Palestinian victims," DIM deputy general chairman KH Masdar Farid Mas'udi said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the DMI also urged every Muslim and other citizens to pray for eternal peace and justice in the Middle East and the world.

Israel has relentlessly pounded the Gaza Strip over the past three weeks, killing at least 1,200 people, mostly civilians.

One air attack that took place on Wednesday hit a school used by the United Nations as a refugee camp, leaving 19 Palestinians dead and 125 others wounded.

Many countries have condemned the Israeli attacks on Palestine and have called for a cease-fire.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has also called for an immediate cease-fire to end the attacks on civilians.

Indonesia has consistently supported Palestinian independence. (hhr)
