New toll road rate sparks outcry

T

he opening of the Jakarta Outer Ring Road (JORR) W2 North, connecting Ulujami in South Jakarta and Kebon Jeruk in West Jakarta, has angered motorists because of the '€œsky-high'€ rate.

Motorist Reza said that he usually paid Rp 2,500 (22 US cents) at the Bintaro Viaduct tollgate when traveling from Pondok Aren in South Tangerang to Ulujami in South Jakarta.

When he did the same journey on July 25, he had to pay Rp 11,000 because the Bintaro Viaduct toll gate was closed and he was forced to enter the 7.9-kilometer JORR W2. He had to pay an additional
Rp 8,500 for the toll road fee at the Pondok Ranji tollgate because he used JORR W2.

'€œI did not want to enter the Pondok Ranji toll gate but I had to do it because I had no alternative,'€
he said.

Chatarina, another motorist, said when she traveled from Serpong in South Tangerang to Ulujami at the end of July, she had to pay Rp 16,000, up from Rp 7,500 the previous month, because she had to use JORR W2.

'€œThe amount of money I had to pay was very high, but the quality of the toll road was very bad,'€ she said.

PT Jasa Marga corporate secretary David Wijayanto said that the rate of Rp 8,500 for four-wheeled vehicles on JORR W2 was similar to other JORR sections.

'€œThey have to pay more because they have to enter the JORR W2. This regulation was enforced on July 22,'€ he said.

Hanura legislator and member of the House of Representatives'€™ Commission V on public works and transportation, Saleh Husin, said that his commission would summon a representative from Jasa Marga in response to motorists'€™ complaints.

'€œWe will also summon and question representatives the Public Works Ministry because they are also responsible for JORR W2,'€ he said.

Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto previously said that the completion of the JORR W2 North section could decrease traffic on the Jakarta inner-city toll road by 30 percent.

He said with the JORR W2 North section, the JORR toll road now connected several key roads in Greater Jakarta, namely the Jakarta-Cikampek, Jagorawi, Jakarta-Tangerang and Sedyatmo toll roads.

JORR W2 is operated by PT Marga Lingkar Jakarta, a joint-venture company of state-owned toll operator PT Jasa Marga and Jakarta-owned company PT Jakarta Marga Jaya. The public works minister opened the section on July 22. (alz)
