he National Police announced that 490 people had died in traffic accidents nationwide from July 22 to Aug. 1 during this year's Idul Fitri holiday travel period.
In addition to the fatalities, 757 people sustained major injuries, while 2,859 people were lightly injured, according to National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie. He added that there were a total of 2,196 traffic accidents during this time period.
By comparison, 575 people died in traffic accidents over the same period in 2013, while 956 people suffered from major injuries and 3,443 people sustained minor injuries. There were 2,616 road accidents last year.
"The number of accidents have decreased by 16 percent, from 2,616 in 2013 to 2,196 this year ['¦] most of the traffic accidents involved motorcycles, with as many as 2,743 motorcycles involved this year. However, the number of motorcycles involved in the accidents decreased by 14 percent from 2013," Ronny said.
Ronny explained that there were also several water transport accidents that deserve more attention.
Furthermore, 66,216 traffic violations have been processed by police between July 22 and Aug. 1; 28,834 resulting in the issuance of a ticket and the remaining 37,382 garnering a warning. By comparison, last year, there were 99,534 traffic violations, with 42,127 people receiving tickets and 57,407 receiving a warning.
The National Police will continue to monitor Idul Fitri traffic until Aug. 6. They have deployed 134,795 police officers to help maintain road safety along various routes nationwide. (fss)
