Hotels see occupancy rate boost in holiday destination cities

T

his year'€™s longer Idul Fitri holiday benefited the hospitality sector, as hotels saw a surge in bookings by domestic tourists over the past week.

Vivi Herlambang, Sahid Hotel Group director of sales marketing and business development, Vivi Herlambang, said that the hotel chain saw higher occupancy rates, particularly in homebound travelers'€™ destination cities, namely Yogyakarta and Surakarta in Central Java, as well as Malang and Surabaya in East Java, during the holiday.

'€œThe occupancy rate at Sahid Rich Yogyakarta was between 90 and 100 percent over the week,'€ Vivi told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

'€œThe same rate was recorded at Sahid Jaya Solo and Kusuma Sahid Solo.'€

Sahid Surabaya and Sahid Montana in Malang were also fully booked for the week, Vivi said.

'€œWe saw a higher number of guests this year, as compared to the Idul Fitri holiday last year, partly due to the longer holiday, which spanned one full week,'€ she said.

Vivi, however, said that occupancy rates in the capital city had decreased, as most of its residents had embarked on the annual exodus.

'€œHotels in the capital city usually see lower occupancy rates during the Idul Fitri holiday,'€ Vivi said.

'€œHowever, Grand Sahid Jaya in Jakarta this year recorded a higher number of guests, with an occupancy rate of between 70 and 80 percent, higher than last year'€™s rate of 60 percent,'€ she continued.

She said that the increase was particularly driven by severe traffic jams in the suburbs of Jakarta, causing most of its residents to opt to stay in the city central.

'€œThe increasing occupancy rate was also due to several promotion packages, including for those who didn'€™t want to bother with house chores as their domestic helpers had left for their hometowns,'€ Vivi said.

Separately, Made Darmawan, regional director of business development at the Mantra Group, the Australia-based hotel chain, said that hotels in Bali had also seen higher occupancy rates during the holiday.

The group'€™s luxury hotel, Peppers Sentosa in Seminyak, Bali, was fully booked between Friday last week and Tuesday, due to an increasing number of tourists coming to the Island of the Gods during the holiday.

'€œThe Idul Fitri holiday this year is concurrent with the island'€™s peak holiday season,'€ Made told the Post.

'€œUsually we get more travelers from Australia and Europe, but in the past week we saw a higher number of domestic tourists on the island.'€

Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel in Denpasar, Bali, also saw an increasing number of tourists staying at the hotel.

The hotel'€™s executive assistant manager Discovery, Pandu Djojoadisoeprapto, told tribunnews.com that the hotel saw a 10 percent occupancy rate increase during the Idul Fitri holiday this year from last year'€™s.

'€œThe increase [in the number of guests] is quite significant,'€ Pandu said on Thursday.

'€œThe guests came from various countries, but half of them were domestic tourists.'€

Pandu said that the occupancy rate increase was recorded on July 27 and was expected to recede starting Saturday.
