No Jokowi-Kalla witnesses at ballot box opening

S

outh Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) chairmanMuhammad Ikbal acknowledged that there were no witnesses on behalf of the JokoWidodo-Jusuf Kalla ticket during the opening of the ballot boxes on Friday.

"We understand that none of the witnesses turned up. Everyone has a choice [to be present] as long as they inform us beforehand," Ikbal said on Saturday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The boxes were opened after the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa presidential ticket filed a lawsuit against the results of the ballot in Pengadegan, South Jakarta.

Around 130 ballot boxes were opened, Ikbal said, in order to retrieve important documents that would help the General Elections Commission (KPU) in responding to the Prabowo-Hatta lawsuit.

Although there were rumors that the documentation from the Pegadengan polling stations had not been delivered to the KPUD headquarters on Jl. Mampang Prapatan, Ikbal confirmed that, in fact, they had arrived safely at 7 p.m. Friday evening.

"How could they not reach the KPUD safely? They were escorted by police officers and Panwaslu [Elections Supervisory Committee] representatives," he said.(fss)
