ndonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has urged the Supreme Court to write a letter instructing all judges and prosecutors to hand down maximum punishments in corruption cases and recover state funds as far as possible.
ICW researcher Emerson Yuntho said an issuance letter could be a stimulus for judges and prosecutors in giving severe punishments as well as building agreement on eradicating corruption.
'Public cynicism will grow as long as judges give lenient sentences on corruption cases,' Emerson told reporters during a press conference in Jakarta on Sunday.
The ICW found that there were 210 corruption cases (see photo below), involving 260 people, 20 of whom were acquitted by corruption courts because either the prosecutors could not provide strong evidence to build the cases or the judges did not consider them corruption case.
The remaining 240 convicts received various sentences from one year to life imprisonment, with an average sentence of 35 months.
