ogyakarta and the Chinese city of Shanghai have forged a "twin city" partnership in an attempt to improve relations between Indonesia and the People's Republic of China.
The partnership was signed by Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and Shanghai mayor Yang Xiong in Shanghai on Wednesday. Both leaders also discussed potential cooperation ideas in the wake of the deal.
Hamengkubuwono mentioned that the cooperation between the two cities would be a strategic means of improving ties between the two countries.
'I hope that the benefits of this deal will be felt by the people of both nations, especially in the field of education, tourism and culture,' Hamengkubuwono said on Wednesday as quoted by Antara.
The governor also expressed the hope to build a Chinese cultural center in Yogyakarta in order to encourage increased cultural awareness and interaction with China.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong said that the tourism industry offered the greatest potential for cooperation between the two cities, adding that doing so was bound to expand possibilities in other fields.
'Tens of thousands of tourists from Shanghai visited Indonesia in 2013. This partnership with Yogyakarta can benefit them for the better,' Yang added.(dyl)
