tate-owned land system manufacturer PT Pindad on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South African-based Rheinmetal Denel Munition to manufacture large-caliber munitions at the former's facility in Turen, East Java.
The MoU was signed by Pindad president director Sudirman Said, RDM's CEO Nobert Schulze and new business development executive manager David Rogers.
'The cooperation is expected to fulfill internal demands by the Indonsian Military (TNI) as well as to make Pindad a manufacturing hub to supply countries in the Asia Pacific region,' Sudirman told reporters after the signing.
Schulze told The Jakarta Post that RDM chose Pindad because the company, which is 51 percent owned by German defense giant Rheinmetall, had yet to achieve a foothold in this region.
'Besides, Pindad already has the capability to manufacture and handle ammunition,' he said.
Schulze admitted that Pindad's production facilities have to be modernized, but he was 'confident that Pindad will be able to catch up with the latest technology we are bringing in.'
Both companies must still discuss the details of their cooperation and Sudirman said a joint venture might be established to produce a variety of ammunition ranging in caliber from 30 to 105 millimeters.
