Simon Santoso joins RI squad for world champs

imon Santoso will join the lineup of Indonesian shuttlers competing at the upcoming 2014 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Aug. 25-31.

Simon got his card after China'€™s men'€™s singles shuttler Du Pengyu withdrew from the tournament due to injury.

'€œI'€™m glad I can compete [in the world championships]. [Although I was only] on the waiting list before [Pengyu withdrew], I kept preparing myself for the tournament. Hopefully I can give my best performance,'€ Simon said in a statement.

Based on the BWF draw result on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the eighth-seeded Simon will face Spain'€™s Pablo Abian in the first round of the tournament. Simon played Pablo during the 2007 BWF World Championships and won 21-18, 21-15.

Aside from Simon there are 23 other shuttlers set to compete in the championships, including fellow men'€™s singles player Tommy Sugiarto, as well as Linda Wenifanetri and Bellaetrix Manuputty in the women'€™s singles.

Meanwhile, Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan, Angga Pratama/Rian Agung Saputro, Ricky Karanda Suwardi/Berry Angriawan and Markis Kido/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon will compete in the men'€™s doubles, as well as Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii, Anggia Shitta Awanda/Della Destiara Haris, Pia Zebadiah Bernadet/Rizki Amelia Pradipta and Suci Rizki Andini/Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah in the women'€™s doubles event.

Riky Widianto/Richi Puspita Dili, Markis Kido/Pia Zebadiah Bernadet, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Rizki Amelia Pradipta and Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto are set to play in the mixed doubles event.
