akarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said he was upbeat that the South Cipinang Besar low-cost apartments in East Jakarta, which are approaching completion, would be ready by September.
The apartments are set to accommodate squatters occupying the banks of the Ciliwung River in Kampung Pulo and Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, which regularly flood during the rainy season.
'This September, the apartments will be ready for Kampung Pulo residents,' Jokowi said during an inspection of the site on Thursday.
The South Cipinang Besar low-cost apartments will be able to accommodate 200 families, while another apartment block in Jatinegara Kaum, also in East Jakarta, will have the same capacity.
'We will relocate the families based on their neighborhood units. I am sure they will be happy to stay here due to the strategic location. Even I myself would want to,' Jokowi said.
Jokowi also instructed the Jakarta Housing and Administrative Building Agency to acquire more land near the area so the city could build new apartment towers.
The city aims to relocate thousands of families occupying riverbanks before building roads in order to make way for dredging equipment. (nvn)
