T

he Indonesian women'€™s chess team, which had initially excelled in the games, ended up ignominiously in 61st place among 136 participating countries at the Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway, while their countrymen finished in 43rd (out of 177) position.

Irene Kharisma, Medina Warda Aulia, Chelsie Monica Sihite, Dewi Citra and Umi Fisabillah had started their campaign well by winning the first four games in the 11-round competition, which ran from Aug. 1 to 14, including the shocking defeats of higher-rated Romania and Armenia. But with only one other win, a draw and five losses in the remaining rounds, they were eventually consigned to mid-table. Russia won the women'€™s section, followed by China and Ukraine.

In the men'€™s section, Susanto Megaranto and teammates defeated the Faroe Islands in the last round on Thursday, but the win failed to lift them farther up in the standings as they recorded six wins, a draw and four losses.

China was unstoppable in taking the top position, with Hungary and India in second and third place respectively.
