A tale of two MINIs

MINI Paceman. JP/Primastuti Handayani

One is a maxi Mini; the other is a sporty individual. One is a four-door hatchback; another is a coupé. There are similarities and differences between the Mini Cooper Countryman and the Paceman.

The Countryman is the largest car in terms of size in the Mini lineup, and can accommodate four adults comfortably. It is not a regular small hatchback. Instead, it is a five-door compact crossover utility vehicle. This is an advantage for those who are loyal to the Mini brand, but are in need of a car with the functionality of a crossover utility.

In constant, the Paceman has a stylish design and is more of a fit for younger drivers, thanks to its resemblance to Land Rover'€™s trendy two-door Range Rover Evoque.

'€œThe two cars are aimed at two different market segments,'€ explained Henning Diederichs, Mini products manager, during a lunch break in Malmo, Sweden.

'€œThe Countryman is aimed at a young family with two children, who need more space for their cargo,'€ he said. '€œWhile the Paceman is aimed at customers who love a sporty kind of Mini.'€

Indeed, the Paceman is less spacious inside, compared to the Countryman, but that brings out the typical Mini intimacy.

Both cars come with standard all-wheel drive and that made driving them much easier, especially when we had to pass narrow country roads through villages after passing the Oresun Bridge, which connects Denmark'€™s capital, Copenhagen, and Malmo.

The Countryman '€” the four-cylinder engine of which comes in two sizes: a two-liter and a 1.6-liter '€” complies with EU6 emission regulations and, thus, achieves much lower emissions. These engines have a combined fuel consumption of between 7.1 and 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on the type. The power of the 160 kilowatt, 218 horsepower engine is transferred to all four wheels to ensure maximum traction and stability during maneuvers.

Meanwhile, the Paceman has two types of gasoline and two types of diesel engines, each 1.6-liters, four-cylinder. These engines have a similar fuel consumption range as the Countryman and they also
comply with EU6 emissions regulations.

With the different variants of the Countryman and Paceman, Mini lovers can pick which one suits them best based on their needs and each car'€™s functionality.
