urabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini rejected a plan to raise the entrance fee at the Surabaya Zoo from Rp 15,000 (US$1.28) to Rp 25,000 per person after her administration gained full control over the zoo on Monday.
'The purpose of the zoo is not to seek profit. Apart from the local budget, its revenues can come from advertising partnerships,' she said as quoted by Antara in Surabaya on Tuesday.
Risma added that the Surabaya Zoo must remain an affordable recreation site for the city's residents.
Since the beginning of the zoo's takeover in the middle of 2013, Risma said, the Surabaya administration had been preparing to cover all of the operational costs at the zoo.
Reports have indicated that the Surabaya administration has allocated Rp 52 billion to the zoo, Rp 10 billion of which will be disbursed this year.
Risma said a number of parties had displayed a willingness to partner with the zoo by -- among others things -- providing food for zoo animals.
'There are advertisement offers and support [offered] through corporate social responsibility programs. Revenue sources other than tickets must be optimized,' she said.
Meanwhile, Surabaya Zoo management director Ratna Achjuningrum said the zoo's operational costs could reach Rp 1.7 billion a year, while revenues may only amount to Rp 1.6 billion.
She said 92 percent of the zoo's profits were generated by ticket sales. Other potential sources of income existed, however, such as renting out open green space for advertising, Ratna added. (dyl/ebf)
